This past winter I worked with the PinBox 3000 in my mechanical engineering class. Our objective was to come up with our own theme and then work with this theme to create a unique pinball machine. My theme was an ice hockey rink. My goal was to create a machine that both symbolized an ice rink while having shots that you would see in a hockey game. The first step in my process was putting the ice rink template on the play-board. To do this I printed out the template to fit the play-board, then mod podged it down onto the play-board. After this I cut off the backplate and inserted acrylic that ran along the sides and the back to make it look like glass. After completing these tasks I realized that I wanted a shot that would symbolize a goal and a shot that would symbolize a wrap around dump in. Before I got to making these shots though I made a ramp that would drop the ball at center ice to symbolize a puck drop and the start of a game. I used acrylic to do this hoping that the ramp would be completely see through, but unfortunately after laser cutting parts of it the acrylic, it got slightly tarnished and was no longer see through. After getting a 3D modeled net from Thingiverse I printed it out and glued it down to the back of the play-board. What may be my favorite aspect to this game and one other thing I added was a goalie. The goalie is connected to a servo motor and a micro bit so a second player can control the goalie using the red button. Once this shot was complete I added my final shot, a wraparound. This shot is a bit challenging as the player has to get the ball to have enough momentum in order for it to come out the other side. The final touches I added to make the machine look more sleek was black vinyl and the logos of the Original Six NHL teams. If I had more time I would’ve liked to improve the play-field by adding bumpers and ball lanes to make the game more challenging. Additionally I would’ve liked to improve the durability of the machine. I had attempted to make a new launcher using Fusion360 but unfortunately it was taking me a lot of time to get my launcher to work so I moved on from this. One other improvement that I would’ve liked to get to is putting in new bumpers. Overall it was a great time turning this cardboard PinBox 3000 into a hockey rink themed pinball machine.
